When searching for the right senior living community, one often overlooked factor can make all the difference: staff longevity. At Atria Darien, the story of Marge Jagodzinski – who has served residents faithfully since 2009 – demonstrates how long-tenured employees create the stability, trust and deep connections that transform a community into a true home.

Recently honored with the 2024 Exceptional Service Award, the highest recognition within Atria’s family of brands, Marge represents the cornerstone of what makes Atria communities special: dedicated staff who build relationships that span years, not months.

“Marge is the welcoming face of our community,” says Amanda Andrews, Executive Director at Atria Darien. “Residents and coworkers rely on her in so many ways. She goes the extra mile to ensure everyone’s well-being, and her impact is felt every day.”

Fifteen years of building trust through consistency

For Marge, who joined Atria in 2009, the most rewarding aspect of her 15-year tenure is the deep relationships she’s built with residents over time. One particularly meaningful moment stands out in her memory. A resident facing a concerning health issue was hesitant to go to the hospital. She turned to Marge for guidance, asking, “Marge, do you think I should go?” With Marge’s reassurance, the resident responded, “Okay, Marge, if you say so.”

This simple exchange reveals the profound trust that develops when staff members remain present in residents’ lives for years – the kind of trust that families seek when helping a loved one transition to a new chapter in life.

A foundation of stability

Marge’s journey at Atria Darien began when her daughter, who led fitness classes at the community, introduced her to the environment. What started as a part-time position quickly evolved into her becoming a full-time receptionist and a stable presence that residents and families have relied on for a decade and a half.

Like many Atria communities, Atria Darien benefits from long-term staff members who provide continuity of care and relationships that matter deeply to residents. This consistency allows staff to truly know each resident’s preferences, stories and needs – something impossible to replicate with endless staff turnover.

“Marge is always looking for ways to support the entire team,” Andrews notes. “She steps in whenever and however she’s needed, and she radiates positive energy.”

The wisdom that comes with experience

When asked what advice she would give to those beginning a career in senior living, Marge draws on her years of experience to suggest embracing the unique nature of helping older adults during an important phase in their lives.

“In this work, you will develop skills that go far beyond the technical parts of your job,” she says. “Most important, take time to listen, engage and show compassion. It’s the small moments of connection that make a lasting impact, not only on the residents but on you as well.”

This philosophy, refined over years of service, doesn’t just apply to staff – it represents the approach that makes Atria communities special places where residents benefit from relationships with familiar faces year after year.

“Marge is truly an amazing asset,” says Andrews. “We’re incredibly fortunate to have her, and no one is more deserving of the Exceptional Service Award.”
