Patty and Bob never expected to find themselves searching for a new home. But when unforeseen circumstances led them to Atria at the Arboretum in Austin, Texas, they knew they needed more than just a comfortable place to live. They were looking for a community that aligned with their values – a place where they could make a difference.
A lifelong commitment to sustainability
Bob, a retired energy consultant, and Patty, a dedicated social worker, have spent much of their lives advocating for sustainability and green energy. When they discovered Atria at the Arboretum’s electric car charging stations and learned about the community composting program, they saw more than just amenities; they saw a shared commitment to the environment.
Bringing climate awareness to senior living
As founders of Climate Buddies, a nonprofit organization that encourages people to incorporate climate-conscious decisions into daily life, Patty and Bob believe that every action – no matter how small – has an impact. Now, they hope to bring this mission to their fellow residents and employees at Atria at the Arboretum.
“Taking steps against climate change can give people a sense of pride and purpose,” Bob explains. “For older adults especially, thinking about the legacy we leave behind for our children and grandchildren makes this work even more important.”
Finding inspiration in a vibrant community
Since moving to Atria, the couple has been inspired by the diversity of interests and experiences among their fellow residents. They see the vibrant community as the perfect place to foster conversations and create meaningful change. “There are so many interesting people here,” Patty says. “It’s a place full of ideas and energy to tap into.”
Practical steps for a greener future
The couple’s approach is simple: start a dialogue, take action locally and empower others to recognize their own influence. They’ve found that people from all backgrounds and beliefs are open to common sense.
“So much of what we advocate for isn’t controversial at all,” Bob adds. “It’s just practical. It’s about making thoughtful choices that benefit everyone.”
Creating a model for sustainable senior living
Their goal is to create an organizing model that showcases the power of senior living communities in environmental advocacy. They see possibilities for residents to work together to adopt sustainable habits, whether by reducing waste, conserving energy or supporting eco-friendly initiatives.
For Patty and Bob, Atria at the Arboretum isn’t just a place to live – it’s a community with the potential to lead by example. Through small actions and shared purpose, they hope to inspire their neighbors to see sustainability not as a challenge, but as an opportunity to create a better world.
Leaving a lasting legacy
As they continue their journey, they invite others to join them. Because for Patty and Bob, the fight against climate change isn’t just about science or policy – it’s about leaving a legacy of responsibility, resilience and hope.
