Winning the Exceptional Service Award was an emotional moment for Kryselle Tolentino, Engage Life Program Instructor at Atria Willow Glen.
“I was speechless. I just kept saying, ‘Thank you for seeing me,’” Kryselle shares. “Because this is who I really am – the energy, the joy for the work. It fills my heart to be recognized in this way.”
The Exceptional Service Award is the highest honor given by Atria Management Company to those who go above and beyond for residents. In her three years at Atria Willow Glen, Kryselle has become known for her contagious enthusiasm and ability to connect with residents.
A journey from nursing to enriching lives
Before joining Atria, Kryselle’s background in nursing led her to work closely with memory care residents, an experience she found deeply fulfilling. She later sought a role where she could support seniors in a different way – encouraging independence, fostering connections and introducing new experiences to enrich their lives.
“Some people are introverts, and some are extroverts,” she says. “I love figuring out what makes each person light up.” She likens getting to know residents to reading a new book, uncovering the layers of their personalities and experiences.
Helping residents thrive: Bernice’s story
One resident, Bernice, is a perfect example of the impact Kryselle has. Initially hesitant, Bernice was recovering from an injury and unsure about joining community activities. But Kryselle gently encouraged her – whether it was a drumming class or another social program, she always extended an invitation.
Over time, Bernice gained confidence, improved her mobility and eventually began assisting with classes to inspire her neighbors to engage more fully in community life.
Bringing energy and creativity to senior living
“Her boundless energy is felt the moment she walks through the doors,” says Jill Knickerbocker, Engage Life Director at Atria Willow Glen. “Krys always arrives singing a favorite song, instantly making everyone smile. Kryselle enriches our entire community. Atria Willow Glen wouldn’t be the same without her.”
Beyond her role in Engage Life programming, Kryselle is known for her adaptability and resourcefulness. Whether troubleshooting a tech issue during her Tech Time class, leading Aqua Fitness and Cardio Drumming sessions (complete with the perfect playlist) or turning a last-minute entertainment cancellation into an unforgettable karaoke afternoon, she approaches every challenge with a can-do attitude and a joyful spirit.
A passion that transforms the community
Kryselle’s passion extends to the community’s succulent garden, where she teaches residents about plant propagation, and to art classes, where she inspires creative expression using unexpected tools like forks and dish scrubs.
“Everything I do, I put my heart and soul into,” she says. In her present role, Kryselle has found more than just a job – she’s discovered a purpose-driven career surrounded by support and a sense of belonging. And in return, the residents, her colleagues and the entire community continue to thrive.
The heart of senior living
Atria’s all-inclusive amenities and thoughtfully planned programs create opportunities for residents to connect, grow and enjoy life. But the true heart of the community is people like Kryselle – those whose passion, creativity and kindness make every day more meaningful for the residents they serve.
It’s not just about activities or awards. It’s about people helping people thrive.
