Atria resident Jay Furman leads an active lifestyle, which has helped him discover the joys of senior living.

At 97 years old, Jay is busier than many young people. He volunteers at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and will soon carry the flag to lead the alumni in the Commencement Ceremony at the University of Pennsylvania where he graduated in 1934 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

In his spare time, Jay also enjoys folk dancing, woodcarving, writing and gardening. He also visits Temple University each year to speak to the graduating class about how to enjoy life as an older adult.

Jay is currently teaching his fellow residents how to play bridge. Click here to read his Bare Bones Bridge tip sheet.

I love the joy of the people who live here, as well as the warmth of the friendships that I have developed. I also love that there are still programs and occasions that I have not yet experienced. Fresh air, friends and exercise – what more could you ask for?

I feel we are not just residents. We are a community and we care about each other, it does not get any better than that.
